**Do not fear what is unknown..for it is a gift from God. Always remember that God is the "way
maker", he makes things happen for a reason and teaches you the way to go. Everyone with a
Down syndrome child will tell you they are never in short supply of love in such a way that the
only expression you can clearly have when meeting one of these children is pure happiness!!!!**
The Miracle of Down
Syndrome!

Down syndrome is a very misunderstood syndrome. It is by no means what it
was thought to be 25 years ago.
At one time it was interpreted that woman over 40 had a greater risk of having a
Downs child. Today statistics show that 80% of Downs children are born to
women under the age of 35.
Doctors study Downs children from the information they receive from the loving
parents and caretakers who in this day and age keep their angels at
home...where by the way they should be. We the parents inform the doctors of
all progress with our Downs children. The physical, mental and health issues.
The dated institutions where Downs children use to be put can no longer provide
updated information on Downs children today, as they are no longer
institutionalized. Today, the adults with Down syndrome are being integrated into
the communities. At one time they were so misunderstood they were given shock
treatments. The fact is they were too smart. Most understood completely what
they were being told to do. They just didn't understand why they were being
talked down to, so they would rebel.
Downs children are very smart and they rarely forget anything. 25 years ago, in
my area, this was known as the mysterious black disease. No one knew too
much about it and just institutionalized their child because of society.
At that time if you bore a Downs child, it would have been considered an
embarrassment to your family in most cases. People thought the child was
mentally retarded and needed to be "put away".
In my eyes, more of a case of "out of sight out of mind". What they really lost was
an incredible love and angelic child who was sent to them by God. Only special
people have these special children. If you choose to give up your God given gift,
you will truly miss out on the joys of life.
Downs children today, still have limited resources, especially under the age of 6
and in some towns in Canada. People still have this stigma that these children
are mentally disabled to the point that they are unable to live and learn as a child
without Down syndrome.
I am here to tell you... this is definitely not the case. I was 38 when I became
pregnant with Remi. I had a "triple marker" completed to test for Down
syndrome. It came back negative.
Professionals gave me the worst case scenario when Remi was born. He
probably would not walk until he was around 4 or 5, wouldn't have good
communication skills and definitely would have to have open heart surgery at age
1. Remi was born with CHD (congenital heart defect) which was explained to me
as "ventricular septal defect" which meant that one of his ventricles had a space
of about 7mm from the heart. At the children hospital doctors informed me that
they had never seen that big of a gap grow back on it's own. Anything under
5mm was completely possible.
So when I brought Remi back 1 year later to schedule his surgery, doctor's were
amazed to see through ultra sound something they say they had never seen
before...the space was growing back on it's own. I remember one of the doctors
saying "we have never seen this" "I don't know what your doing but keep doing it"
I expressed to him that all we do is pray and love Remi with all our might. They
decided to wait 2 years and see what would happen.
At three we again brought him back, and again to their amazement it was still
growing back. This year in 2007 we brought Remi back to the children's hospital
for another ultra sound. The doctor came out and said to me "I've got good news
and bad news...what would you like to hear first. I of course said 'the bad news".
As his eyes started to shimmer and with a little smirk he said " the bad news
is..you'll probably never see me again". The good news is..Remi's space has
completely attached.
At that moment not only did I realize that Remi had made medical history, I also
realized he was given to me to learn a lesson in faith. My son is nothing short of
miraculous. Everything they said he wouldn't do, he has done tenfold. Don't get
me wrong, he is still going to have obstacles..but so do children without Downs.
Here's what I am sure of...the white light that people talk about..in my life comes
from Remi.
Join me to watch and learn about the miracle of Downs...the secret is...they don't
know what I know..first hand...meet my "RNR" Remi Noel Roper.
